Listen to Your Song

The title isn’t some crazy metaphor to inspire you to follow your heart…. Just listen to your song! It is different for everyone, but everyone should have a song that pumps them up, makes them feel strong, happy… just simply unstoppable. When you find your song, listen to it when you’re not at your best, when you need a pick-me-up, or on your way to work or the gym.

This song may not even be in line with what you usually listen to, or maybe it’s a song from your childhood and brings back a fond memory. Maybe it’s, “Man I Feel Like a Woman” by Shania Twain because we all know that can energize anyone!

For me, my song is by some rapper I still don’t know, and how I stumbled across it, I couldn’t even tell you. Regardless, my song is “Remember the Name” by Fort Minor. It’s on a playlist ready to go at a moment’s notice for me on my phone, and I most often play it on my way into work or while I’m starting the day. Instead of driving off dreary-eyed into the next day, I’m shouting through the roof, doing my best at rapping along to my song. By the time it ends, I’m smiling, and I just feel good! When I am particularly stressed or upset or just having a bad day, I play this song, and it’s like I come back to life.

I have a playlist on my phone titled, “Fired Up,” and it’s my go-to for workouts, rough days, and any time I need a pick-me-up. It’s loaded with all these different songs that make me feel good, that make me feel STRONG! Eminem’s “Lose Yourself,” Meghan Trainor’s “Me Too,” Britney Spears’s “Work B!tch,” to name a few.

I have other playlists saved in my phone, where the titles are really just what I use the playlist for, like “Get Sleepy,” “Relax,” or “Whistle While You Work,” the last one being a collection of my favorite Disney songs to keep me going throughout the day for work on some days!

These playlists really have been an important tool in managing my mental health. My problem is overthinking, and so it is hard to clear my mind. If my thoughts get stuck on something, it can really take over me, but with 3 minutes of my song or something from these different playlists, I am back to feeling good!

The great thing about the world we live in today is that you can literally listen to your song any time! With the convenience of cell phones, ipods, and youtube, then of course our handy headphones and airpods, your song should always be accessible in some way. I use Amazon Music app for my playlists, which is awesome for at home because no matter where I am standing, I can just say, “Alexa, play my Fired Up playlist,” and I am filled with joy.

Everyone has a song, and if you haven’t found yours yet, start your search! The right tune can truly change your mood. If you haven’t found yours yet, start searching! Look in some places you wouldn’t expect; seriously, I don’t know how I came across my song, but boy does it make the biggest difference!

What is your song?
